Bob Mould's Celebrated Summer

posted by Affluent White Male

June is a good month if you're a fan of Hüsker Dü or Bob Mould in general.

The singer/guitarist has had quite a diverse career since the flaming car-crash breakup of Hüsker Dü. Mould has come out of the closet, been a deejay, written plot lines for WCW (wrestling is fake? no way), and composed the Daily Show theme song.

He also put together a solo career that has a disproportionate amount of gems. This includes his 1989 album Workbook and his work with the band Sugar.

psssst... by the way: Sugar's spectacular debut, Copper Blue, is being re-issued on vinyl on June 21.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I feel Mould's post-Dü output rivals his work with the seminal punk band. I won't go as far to say it's as good, but I do think it's close enough to merit debate.

That's a debate for another day. The point is, Mould has had an interesting life, which is now being chronicled in his new autobiography, See A Little Light. The book is co-written with Michael "I didn't just write that silly Nirvana book, you know!" Azerrad. The book hits stands on June 15.

If I were a more important man, not a mere blogger, I would have an advance copy. I would read it, feeling a debt to my dedicated readers (Hi Mom and Dad!). I would tell you my thoughts and opinions, whether you wanted to read them or not. Maybe I'd say ,"Boy, that Bob Mould, what a riveting story." Something like that. I'd make reference to his healthy career as a trailblazer.

It would probably be really great.

Alas, I am nothing but a mere blogger, not a respected journalist or even a moral person. So check out this youtube video of the Mould's autobiography's namesake song while I write my list of "25 Reasons I Loved the '90s." Spoiler alert: half of the reasons have to do with Eddie Vedder.

Ditto on the Vedder comment. My other half would probably consist of some combination of the names Cobain, Grohl, and Malkmus. Also, anyone who hasn't read Azerrad's other book Our Band Could Be Your Life definitely should check it out. The stories in its pages contain a great introduction to all things indie from 1981-1991.
