And Then There Was Pie

posted by Sarah Werthan Buttenwieser

After a couple of days when the rollercoaster aspect of parenting—think stomach-turning freefall sensation and loads of screaming in a loop—was seemingly more prevalent than anything else, we were oddly lulled by an afternoon of people and pie.

Or maybe, I’m just trying to say that our cute, sweet farmers’ market—my favorite oft-linked Tuesday Market—threw a pie contest. Inspired by interviewing Gina Hyams about her Pie Contest in a Box, the thing unfolded from oh, fun pie contest to Tuesday Market to raise money to double SNAP benefits at the market to hold said pie contest the same day the Nields are playing.

And, wow, people love pie. Take my word for it. Once we started slicing, I had no time for photos and by the afternoon’s end there was no pie left.

Phil Korman of CISA judged best pie. He would tell you that if you missed out on this fun loving local food-loving event—the fruit pies contained local bounty—you can still snag a ticket for On the Table happening Thursday September 15th. You really don’t have to delay your local food fix. Hurry for your tix.

Having the volunteer crew stacked with lovely folks made it much more fun, too. I got a taste of how “on” every single market vendor must be every single week. Add another wow to that. I told the kids I loved being “on” with the vendors. I might have to volunteer my worker bee-ness to my farm or my orchard.

Even though my afternoon was devoted to pie, I came home with more peaches to make more jam. I have to try one more time this season.

I remained calm and cool and patient beyond belief putting the napped-at-school Saskia partway to sleep. We did some practicing of her being in her room while I was in the hallway. I made it till 9:30 when her papa took over. Until 10:30. Talk about bedtimefail.

The other jazzy news is that Elizabeth Warren announced her candidacy for the United States Senate in my fair state. I’m pretty sure she’s going to be one of the smartest, most levelheaded senators ever. All we have to do is elect her.
