Weird Al Wraps Eight Videos in Eight Days Promotion

Mandatory Fun album coverMandatory fun indeed.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, you may have heard a thing or two about the new music video from song parody kingpin Weird Al Yankovic. Which new video you ask? Good question. As part of the promotional activities for his latest album Mandatory Fun, which was released on July 15, Al has been releasing one new video a day on websites like FunnyorDie.com and CollegeHumor.com.

Mixing straight-up parodies like “Foil” (a conspiracy theory inspired take on Lorde’s “Royals”) and “Handy” (a home improvement themed send-up of “Fancy” by Iggy Azalea) with more original material like the wannabe Pixies rant “First World Problems” and the aptly-titled anthem “Sports Song,” Al gave fans a taste of a variety of genres, while also managing to go viral again and again as each video was shared and re-posted ad infinitum Internet-wide.

Finally, Al brought matters to a close today with the release of “Mission Statement,” a Crosby, Stills and Nash like tune that he paired with a video of a constantly evolving white board that keeps getting marked up with business-speak catchphrases like “core competencies” and “exceptional synergy.”

So what’s next for Weird Al? Maybe a number one album. As of this writing, Mandatory Fun was positioned to become Al’s first number one album with possible tracking week sales of 70 to 75 thousand copies according to Billboard. The latest official Billboard top 200 list will be released on July 23.
