Candidates, Start Your Engines

posted by Maureen Turner

Summer’s drawing to a close, which means this fall’s crop of political candidates are gearing up for the height of campaign season.

City Council candidate Ernesto Cruz kicks off his campaign tonight at 6 p.m. with an event at Cedars Banquet Facility, at 375 Island Pond Rd. The event is free (with a cash bar) and will include music and food.

Cruz is running for one of the Council’s five at-large seats. He had announced his candidacy earlier this year but then took some time off to work for Ed Markey’s senatorial campaign. He’ll be introduced tonight by Ward 3 Councilor Melvin Edwards.

Meanwhile, Ward 8 hopeful Orlando Ramos formally announced his candidacy this week. Ramos, who works as an aide to state Sen. James Welch and serves on the city’s License Committee, will be challenging incumbent John Lysak for the third time. Ramos’ background is in organized labor; he’s a former steward with the carpenters’ union.

In his announcement, Ramos cited two can’t-miss campaign priorities: improving public safety and reducing the tax burden on seniors.
