Quote of the Day

"We know the human heart is a substandard product."

-Josh Marshall of TPM, talking about his frustration with the "conversation" (about mass shootings) that ends up going nowhere

What, indeed, is it about the U.S. that makes us home to a terrible number of these incidents? They happen elsewhere, of course, but not as often as here. Probably, whatever talk there is in the wake of the Connecticut tragedy today, it will fall out to the usual two camps, one marked by extremism ("Arm everyone!"), the other by pre-emptive non-extremism ("Maybe we should consider trying to make sure the insane can't get assault weapons, but of course everyone else can own whatever they want, and I don't mean to say that anyone shouldn't be allowed to pick up a couple of AKs at the gun show").

Neither, of course, will take away this particular problem. Maybe part of the answer lies in more readily available, less stigmatized mental health care?

Not that I think I'm necessarily right. If any answer becomes readily evident, I'm sure most all of us would endorse it forthwith.

Most people should get therapy and it should be considered normal as part of a nation that talks about mental health. "In therapy" has a negative connotation that needs to be reversed. That's the only real answer. Gun control is not it.

The 1927 Bath School bombing killed 45 people - 38 of them children in grades 3 to 6. No firearms necessary... just crazyness.

I think the answer is to make therapy as common and expected as trips to the dentist for cleanings. It can be done by just talking about therapy and mental health as being just as important as physical health.

That and more armed security as well as armed civilians. Fact is all of these mass shooters stop and/or kill themselves when the police arrive or at the first sign of resistance. The Aurora shooter went OUT OF HIS WAY to find a theatre in a venue that didn't allow concealed weapons.

So logically MORE guns are the answer... in the hands of good citizens. Nobody tries to shoot up an NRA rally and no one goes looking for a fight in a UFC training gym. Shootings don't happen in a place with a high likelihood that multiple people have a gun they are trained and willing to use. Sorry but it's the only logical answer at this point. Cliches are cliches because they are based in truth: outlaw guns and only outlaws will have them.
