Ward One race, it's Carney vs. Vidal-McNair

posted by Daryl G. LaFleur

Maureen Carney is not new to the Ward One voters of Northampton. She has served as the Ward One City Councilor since WHMP radio talk show host Bill Dwight hand-picked her as his successor several years ago. According to her website she feels she has the experience to ask the hard questions and to make the difficult decisions to move the city forward. She is always civil and this year she faces an electoral challenge from Andrew Vidal-McNair.

Andrew Vidal-McNair

According to Vidal-McNair's website, he is running a grassroots campaign. His background includes participating in elective campaigns in various capacities for U.S. Congressman John Olver, D-Amherst. In addition to this Vidal-McNair has previously undertaken several of his own campaigns for elective office in his hometown of North Adams, MA narrowly missing a council seat in 1994 but succeeding in becoming a Democratic State Delegate that same year.

Both candidates are openly gay and Vidal-McNair is married.

i have met both candidates. maureen carney's web site is outdated. nov 8th is not the voting date this year. as she said to me on sept 15th, she is just too busy to meet-n-greet her constituents - which i can then deduce as not being engaged wholly in ward 1, make fliers, and it appears, update her web page. i have met andrew vidal-mcnair twice. he appears to be current, concerned, engaged and aware of what is on the minds of his ward 1 constituents.

Too busy to meet -n-greet her constituents? If she's too busy to meet the constituents, then she would obviously be too busy to make any changes that would benefit Ward 1 or handle any issues that arise. If Maureen is too busy, then why is she even running? I didn't realize that we vote on Sundays now......

within the past week, ms. carney has updated her web page, resulting in a change of the voting date and why she is running. she states that she loves northampton, has been elected twice -albeit unchallenged - is chair of the public safety committee, sits on five subcommittees, and asks the hard questions. i watch nctv thursday nights and rarely ever hear her ask a question, or a hard one at best; she is civil, as the article above reports. i have asked her why there is no pedestrian/bike street safety on damon road. i have only seen her driving about town, on tv, at polling stations on primary or election day, but have never seen her walking her ward 1 beat. i do think, though, that she reads the redoubt blog and personal emails, so she is engaged somewhat. will there be a debate scheduled between carney and vidal-mcnair? i have not seen one posted as of yet. there are plenty of community rooms in ward 1, for instance: at the jackson st school, the housing complexes, the laurel park tabernacle, etc.

ever since my comment in mr. lafleur's article regarding mr. susco, ward 1 councilor, ms. carney, has stepped up her campaigning: updated her web site, sent out postcards, and now has agreed to a debate on thursday, oct 29th at 7pm at the council chambers. mr vidal-mcnair has been actively campaigning: meeting ward 1 residents, sending out postcards, attending functions and debates, and is accessible. citizens of ward 1, we have a democratic campaign!
