The orientation of the Smith College Museum of Art—one entrance faces Northampton’s busy Elm
Street, the other the interior of the campus—is an apt symbol of its dual dedication to the academic
community and the community at large, says Margi Caplan, membership and marketing director. In the
former case, that means working with faculty from around the Valley to support curriculum and train
students in docent work and art conservation; in the latter, it’s the many community events the museum
holds, including free Family Days and Second Friday events, which include hands-on art projects for
kids and lectures for all ages.
