Last year was an important time for the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society. DPVHS, which has operated in Franklin and Hampshire counties since 1968, expanded its operation into Hampden County after the financially strapped MSPCA facility in Springfield was forced to close. Dakin purchased the MSPCA building on Union Street in Springfield and re-opened the facility in August. DPVHS had developed a three-year plan to guarantee the placement of all adoptable animals, and as part of its effort to drive down the use of euthanasia, DPVHS launched a clinic for spaying and neutering dogs and cats within a 90-mile radius of its Springfield facility last October.
