Begun at UMass and gradually evolving into a Five College-based credit union, UMassFive now includes other educational and public service groups in its membership, having espoused a philosophy of "cooperatives helping other cooperatives." With just over 24,000 members, the credit union offers everything a bank does, but performs better than a bank because it's "a democratically controlled not-for-profit cooperative, where members are owners and profits are returned to them in the form of better rates and lower fees." If you don't meet them by opening an account at one of their branches (King Street in Northampton or the UMass Student Union in Amherst), you might see them at one of the many charity events they sponsor, including Relay for Life or the Trash to Treasure benefit for the Amherst Survival Center.
