Jim Crocker, a managing partner at Modern Myths, thinks he knows why his comic book store regularly wins this category. "The store doesn't feel like a comic book store," he said. Prior to opening Modern Myths, he had had considerable bookstore experience, and he consciously worked on making his customers "feel like they were walking into a nice, independent bookstore that happens to offer comics." While the store does stock a wide array of newly released mainstream and underground comic titles, it also has a large selection of comic-art books, as well as a rich variety of second-hand graphic novels. The back of the store is devoted to role-playing and board games, and there are regular game-playing events for customers.
