Holyoke Community College, perennially voted Best Two-Year College, is gearing up for a big spike in enrollment for the fall now that applications have soared by 48 percent. With no extra staff to handle the crowds of students, HCC is majoring on "brick and click" classes, online courses, later afternoon classes and programs in satellite locations at Smith College and, potentially, at adult education sites in other towns. Determined to do the impossible, HCC faculty are enriching orientation for students and adding introductory courses aimed at strengthening the skills needed to get the eager new enrollees all the way through to their A.A.s.
