Lately, Baystate Medical Center has focused on improving its "door to balloon" time—the time it takes for newly-arrived heart attack patients to receive angioplasty. Committee members Dr. Bob Baevsky, Louise Labrie, R.N., and Rich Kendra, C.C.R.N., explain that administering that procedure—something that's only done, in our area, at Baystate—within 90 minutes is crucial. Baystate manages 65 minutes. Baystate is also a Level One trauma center and the only place in the Valley that offers open-heart surgery.
