This year, Baystate was represented at the Advocate's Best of the Valley open house by its intensive care unit nurses, who recently won their fourth Beacon Award from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses for excellence in the field. The only level-one trauma unit in the region, Baystate's ICU is known for the strength of its medical care, research that helps shape patient care nationally, and the cutting-edge focus that comes with being a teaching hospital. But the staff works hard to support patients and their families, emotionally and spiritually as well as medically. "It's about treating the patient as a whole, as well as the family," notes R.N. Debbie Baker.
