Organic Farmers Rally

The Northeast Organic Farming Association will hold its 2012 summer meeting Aug. 10 to 12 at UMass Amherst.

The conference will include more than 200 workshops on organic farming and gardening, sustainability, nutrition, food politics and related topics, as well as workshops for children and teenagers, a farmers' market, a country fair and other entertainment.

There will be two keynote addresses: U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), a member of the Agriculture Committee and an advocate for local farms and food, will speak on Friday, Aug. 10 at 7:30 p.m. And consumer advocate Jeffrey Smith, the author of two books about the risks of genetically modified foods, will speak on Sat., Aug. 11 at 7 p.m.

On Friday, Aug. 10, NOFA's Massachusetts chapter will host the premiere screening of the documentary Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of Our Lives, directed by Jeffrey Smith. The 7 p.m. screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Smith. The event is a NOFA Mass. fundraiser; tickets cost $25 to $50 on a sliding scale.
