Turbine at Bishop’s Lounge

NYC-based quintet band Turbine is one funky, rough, finely-tuned act. Full of big, brash rock lines and upbeat, soulful vocals, Turbine’s music is also surprisingly inventive, marked by shaken-up time signatures and unusual song structures. The band has played festival around the country including Bonnaroo and Gathering of the Vibes, but here’s your chance to see them up close and personal at Bishop’s in Northampton. 9 p.m.

Ephemeral String Band at the Montague Bookmill

The musicians of Ephemeral String Band straddle centuries of music, playing country, bluegrass, and Americana of all strains on banjo, fiddle, and mandolin, rounded out with poignant lyrics and careful harmonies. Their live appearances in the Valley are similarly far-reaching: we’ve spotted them at farmers markets, bars, restaurants, weddings, and square dances. Now they’ve come to roost for an evening at the Bookmill, accompanied by some reels, jigs, and sea shanties from touring act The Bombadils and original poetry by Nick Maione. 8 p.m. $10-$15.

Hanging Moon / Sun Burial / Showhorses at Flywheel

It’s a peculiar trifecta playing Flywheel this weekend: Nashville-based punk band Hanging Moon, the Holyoke sludge act Sun Burial, and mathy doomgaze metal band Showhorses from Amherst. “We will be celebrating summer sadness by welcoming melancholy May with heavy riffs and guttural screeches,” Showhorses writes on Facebook. “Hope to see you there!” 8 p.m. $6.

Dan Bern at the Iron Horse

Los Angeles troubadour Dan Bern has recorded nearly two dozen albums in the past 20 years. On his newest, Hoody, Bern is just as humorous and insightful as ever. After a few listens, it will come so no surprise that Bern is most heavily influenced by Bob Dylan, Woodie Guthrie, and, of course, the three legends honored in the new song “Merle, Hank, and Johnny.”  “It’s the culmination of what I’ve been aiming at for a long time,” he said recently, “and also a jumping off point for everything I’m aiming to do next.” With Bob Hillman. 7 p.m. $17.50-$20.
