Last but not least, GWAR and peace… or make that rest in peace, as Valley bassist Nate Fay checks in to recall his memories of the recently departed GWAR frontman Dave Brockie:

“After hearing of the recent passing of the notorious Dave Brockie, aka Oderus Urungus, it brought back a stream of teenage memories,” he recalls. “In 1989 I was introduced to their music and stage show, and became completely obsessed.

“I would call what fans call the ‘slave pit’ and the members were nice enough to talk to me. I eventually developed a relationship with Don Drakulich—aka Sleazi P Martini—who invited me into the pit, too.

“Luckily, my girlfriend also had a dad who worked at the airport. Armed with $20, we made our way down and were greeted with all the members. I got to try on the costumes, see where they rehearsed and built their sets.

“Dave came in a bit later and invited me upstairs to his office. He didn’t say much to me that I can remember, but handed me a stack of merchandise. I was merely 16 years old and this was pretty much the coolest thing that could happen to any super fan of a group.

“The passing of Dave reminded me of how much cooler my teenage years were than most kids’, and how much easier life was.”•
