Throughout their career, irreverent all-female pop rock trio BETTY have been driven by their desire to empower women and girls and end bullying and gender violence. This has led to singing educational songs for the HBO series Encyclopedia, writing and performing TV theme songs for The L Word and Real Sex, and performing at Madison Square Garden with Oprah Winfrey and Gloria Steinem for Eve Ensler’s first-ever Vagina Monologues.
Now they are providing the soundscape for Filthy Lucre, a new installation at MASS MoCA by artist-in-residence Darren Waterston, who selected BETTY’s unique cello and voice combination to accompany his exhibition. BETTY performs at the museum’s Club B-10 this Saturday March 22 at 8 p.m.
Their most recent LP, Bright and Dark, finds the band—sisters Amy and Elizabeth Ziff on vocals and cello and vocals and guitar respectively, plus Alyson Palmer on vocals and bass—backed up by guitarist Tony Salvatore with Mino Gori on drums, and features BETTY’s most popular song to date.
“Did U Tell Her” offers their take on a nonspecific “sex scandal of the century,” as the song’s dubbed newsman voice alerts listeners over a catchy, upbeat groove: “Did you tell her about us/ Did you tell her what we did/ Did you tell her what I asked you/ Did you tell her you said yes … Cheater cheater/ Cheater caught up in a lie/ You’re a cheater/ Cheater so am I.”
