Your typical tour of a historical mansion invites you to see the house through the eyes of its wealthy and powerful owners. You glide through sumptuous public rooms and peep into ornate bedchambers, with perhaps a passing reference to the household’s servants as you approach the back stairs. Enchanted Circle Theater’s The Skinner Servants Tour turns that viewpoint inside out. Subtitled “A Living History of Wistariahurst,” the performance—half house tour, half site-specific play—takes you back to 1927, when the Wistariahurst mansion was home to the Skinner family of Holyoke silk mill owners, where you are welcomed by their servants. Dressed for their domestic roles, from chauffeur to chambermaid, they relate the life of the house, the family and the city from their below-stairs perspective.
