Valley artist and illustrator Rebecca Guay is widely known for her work with Magic: The Gathering, kids’ book illustrations, and graphic novels like Jane Yolen’s story The Last Dragon.
In addition to those pursuits, Guay produces paintings with a distinctive aesthetic. On those canvases, bodies often twine in graceful and dramatic ways in nature. They often evoke the florid textures of Art Nouveau, and their emotional drama harks back to 19th-century romantics. At the same time, Guay’s work seems rooted in a modern sense of the fantastic.
No wonder, then, that you can find her work at places like the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and the American Museum of Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York City. Through the end of October, you can also find her work on prominent display in Northampton in Waking: New Works by Rebecca Guay.
