Hike a Valley Ghost Town

New England is full of evocative oddities that are clues to an older time: fragments of stone walls, metal objects poking up from the ground—cryptic but eloquent remains of history. South Hawley, a Franklin County village long forgotten along with the stagecoach road from Albany to Boston that ran through it, will be explored May 4 on a hike sponsored by the Audubon Society. Historian Mike Whalen will lead the walk, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cellar holes and other archaeologically interesting relics, together with spring flowers and beaver habitat, are among the attractions. $15 members, $20 nonmembers; register by noon on Friday, May 3 by calling (413) 584-3009. Directions will be provided when you register. Bring a lunch and drinking water.
