More to May Day
May Day isn’t just about wrapping ribbons around May poles; it’s also International Workers Day, a celebration of the history and achievements of the worldwide labor movement.
Western Mass. Jobs With Justice marks the day with its annual “Voices of Working People’s History” event. The program, inspired by activist and historian Howard Zinn’s book A People’s History of the United States, will include music and dramatic readings highlighting the voices of “people who make history happen but are usually left out of history books,” organizers say. It will include a particular focus on people from Western Mass., including the late Ward Morehouse of Northampton, the human rights and anti-corporate activist who died last summer.
The Workers’ Day Celebration will take place on Wednesday, May 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heritage State Park Visitors Center at 221 Appleton St. in Holyoke. To reserve a seat, email email@example.com.
