On Women’s Rights

• From Nuciforo’s position paper on women’s rights:
“The right to choose and the right to privacy are fundamental constitutional rights. Nuciforo strongly supports those rights as recognized by Roe v. Wade. He supports a federal freedom of choice act codifying Roe v. Wade into federal law so that the right to choose is protected no matter what the Supreme Court does. He opposes legislation that would undermine reproductive freedom and choice, like the Unborn Victims of Violence Act.”
And from Edwards: “The right to choose and the right to privacy are fundamental constitutional rights. Edwards strongly supports those rights as recognized by Roe v. Wade. He supports a federal freedom of choice act codifying Roe v. Wade into federal law so that the right to choose is protected no matter what the Supreme Court does. He opposes legislation that would undermine reproductive freedom and choice, like the Unborn Victims of Violence Act.”

• From the Nuciforo campaign:
“Nuciforo supports steps to guarantee reproductive choices and reduce unwanted pregnancies, including access to birth control and Title X family planning services. Nuciforo believes all health insurance plans that cover prescription drugs should cover prescription contraceptives and emergency contraception. He supports comprehensive, age-appropriate sex education for young people that includes information on both abstinence and contraception.”
From the Edwards’ campaign: “Edwards supports steps to guarantee reproductive choices and reduce unwanted pregnancies, including access to birth control and Title X family planning services. Edwards believes all health insurance plans that cover prescription drugs should cover prescription contraceptives and we must improve access to emergency contraception. He supports comprehensive, age-appropriate sex education for young people that includes information on both abstinence and contraception.”

On Veterans’ Issues

• From Nuciforo’s position paper “Veteran’s Policy”:
“Health care has been a vital aspect of our nation’s commitment to our military personnel since the days of the Continental Army. In recent years, however, we have been falling short on this crucial commitment. There have been many reports of long delays and underfunding at Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities.”
From Edwards:
“Health care has been a cornerstone of our nation’s commitment to our heroes since the first states undertook responsibility for caring for Continental Army veterans. Today, we are falling short on our historic commitment. Veterans report long delays for appointments at Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities, which have done valiant work under difficult circumstances.”

• From Nuciforo:
“Families of active-duty personnel have been under a great deal of pressure as a result of more frequent extended tours and shorter breaks between deployments. … As congressman, Nuciforo will: Work to close the pay gap between military and civilian pay. Improved pay and benefits will help military personnel better support their families. Create a Military Families Advisory Board within the Department of Defense to incorporate the voices of military families in creating and adjusting family policies, such as separation allowances, life insurance, and savings rules. Call for better funding and more resources for Family Readiness Groups, which help military families support each other while they endure the stress of a loved one’s deployment.”
From Edwards:
“The conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan have put our military and their families under incredible pressure through frequent extended tours and an unsustainable operations tempo. … As president, John Edwards will: Close the Gap Between Military and Civilian Pay: After 30 years, it’s time to finally close the gap between military and civilian pay. . … Give Military Families a Voice in Family Policies: As president, Edwards will create a Military Families Advisory Board within the Department of Defense to give family members a voice in considering how to adjust family policies—such as separation allowances, life insurance and savings rules—based on operational needs. New Respect and More Resources for Family Readiness Groups: Currently, it is difficult for Family Readiness Groups (FRGs) to raise sufficient funds to support their activities. FRGs are critical to maintaining a sense of community among military families during deployments, and providing crucial services. Edwards believes FRGs play an invaluable role supporting families under stress and deserve more resources and respect.”

On the Economy:

• From Nuciforo’s “Eight-Point Blueprint to Restore Economic Justice in America”:
“Small businesses receive approximately ninety percent of their financing from banks, where larger businesses are only reliant on banks for approximately thirty percent of their financing. Historically, small businesses have also drawn upon home equity and credit cards to supplement their businesses. Since the collapse of the housing bubble, small businesses are unable to use equity as they have in the past and nearly eighty percent of small business owners have stated that there [sic] credit card terms have changes [sic] for the worse. Since the economic recession, 68 percent of small business owners reported an increase in their interest
rate and 41 percent reported a reduction in their credit limit.”
From Stacey Lawson’s economic paper called “Making More in America”:
“Small businesses receive approximately ninety percent of their financing from banks, where larger firms are only reliant on banks for about thirty percent of their financing.  But with the recession, banks have become hesitant to lend to small businesses, especially at the rate they were previously. Small business owners have also historically drawn upon home equity and credit cards to support their companies financially. With the collapse of the housing bubble, home equity extraction is no longer available to small business owners in the same way. In addition, nearly eighty percent of small business owners have reported that their credit card terms have changed for the worse. Since the economic recession, 68 percent of small business owners reported an increase in their interest rate and 41 percent reported a reduction in their credit limit.”
Nuciforo’s economic-policy paper also includes a chart, titled “Promlems [sic] Facing Small Business” that’s identical to a “Problems Facing Small Business” chart in Lawson’s paper, with one small change: the order of the items on Nuciforo’s chart are in reverse order compared to Lawson’s.•
