Economic outlook grim?
Perhaps Windsor, Conn.’s Grimm Generation (thegrimmgeneration.com) has just the way to stretch your entertainment dollar this weekend.
In addition to three performances (Beantown’s Patrick Coman and the band’s own Lys Guillorn will perform opening solo sets), attendees of the Grimms’ Aug. 10 Bing Art Center engagement can take in a movie for the low price of $5 admission.
“We naturally gravitate to making a spectacle of ourselves, so we considered what would be an appropriate visual accompaniment to our set,” explains Carmen Champagne, who founded the band with guitarist Jason Krug after the two met on a date, as the story goes. “The themes and visuals of Sam Mendes’ American Beauty kept coming up… The intensity, even in the quietest moments, was something that we could relate with. So we crafted the set toward the movie.”
“It’s a lovely mash up of suburban noir and dark, wooden pop songs,” adds Krug.
As for the Grimm future, Champagne says to be on the lookout for a five-song EP followed by a full-length CD proper in the very near future.
“We’ll also be releasing a new video soon,” she concludes. “Most likely a snuff-style film for our new song, ‘Blink, I’m Gone.'”
The Bing Arts Center is located at 716 Summner Avenue in Springfield. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile… October 16 may be National Boss Day in the U.S., but folks around these parts may opt to celebrate a week later. The Boss of bosses, Bruce Springsteen, has just announced an Oct. 25 play at Hartford’s XL Center. Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.com starting Aug. 10.
The fall leg of the Wrecking Ball tour comes on the heels of a previously announced U.S. kickoff at Fenway Park (Aug. 14-15) and subsequent Gillette Stadium show in Foxboro Aug. 18.
Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball was released on Columbia Records in March of this year and promptly debuted at number one in 16 countries, including America, of course. And his just completed European trek has yielded adjectives like “gigantic,” “thrilling” and “the stuff of legends” in Rolling Stone, The Irish Independent and the like.

In other national news, “Maneaters” Daryl Hall and John Oates have inked a deal to bring their Do What You Want, Be What You Are tour to MGM Grand at Foxwoods. Tickets are on sale now for the Nov. 10 show at $35 to $60, depending on your proximity to the duo and their patented vocal symmetry. The tour comes on the heels of the group’s first boxed set of same name, containing, of course, the 11 top 10 hits as well 16 previously unreleased tracks, and more.
Other upcoming MGM offerings include Jerry Seinfeld (Aug. 10-11), Jane’s Addiction (Aug. 18), Duran Duran (Aug. 24) and Stone Temple Pilots (Aug. 25).

And since we’ve stumbled onto the casino circuit, nu-metal notables Linkin Park are scheduled to hold court at the neighboring Mohegan Sun (Mohegan Sun) Aug. 12 with special guest Mutemath. A special program note with this one, too: the entire floor will be standing general admission, with no chairs. The local show comes fresh off Linkin Park’s recently announced two VMA nominations for their video “Burn It Down.” Tickets are $69.50 and $49.50.
Rounding out the Sun summer are no less than the likes of Country bad boy Eric Church (Aug. 17, with special guest Robert Earl Keen), “Drive-By” artists Train with Mat Kearny & Andy Grammer (Aug. 19) and The Carnival of Madness Tour (Aug. 30)—the last of which offers decibel deliverers Evanescence, Chevelle, Halestorm, Cavo and New Medicine.

Last but not least… You may not be in Kansas anymore, but you can see the band of same name for free at the Milford, Conn. Oyster Festival (milfordoysterfestival.com) on Aug. 18. The event brings upwards of 50,000 people downtown each year for an afternoon of food and free family entertainment. Rock’s “wayward sons” are slated to hit the mainstage at 3:45 p.m., preceded by Northern Renegade (1:45 p.m.), Rum Runners (12:25 p.m.) and Waking Elliot (11:30 a.m.).
