Matthias Leutrum, artist and part-time resident of the Valley, is artist in residence at The Children’s Storefront in Harlem, N.Y. In fall 2010, his Human Cannonballs series appeared at Northampton’s A.P.E. Gallery, and this month he brings the work of his Harlem students to town, where it will hang alongside that of Valley-based artists Chelsea Granger, Louise Laplante and Ali Osborn.

All the art examines the idea of silhouettes, bringing up issues of the form’s limits and the nature of the information it can convey. The student work includes murals, wall constructions and short videos, and for the project, the students looked at the long history of silhouette-making, from ancient cave paintings to 19th-century portraiture and likenesses on coins.

Through March 31, A.P.E. at Window, 126 Main St., Northampton, (413) 586-5553, apearts.org.
